Gambaran Tingkat Pengetahuan Masyarakat terhadap Penggunaan Antibiotik Secara Tepat dan Aman

Abstract

Inappropriate antibiotic use is one of the factors contributing to the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance, while public knowledge regarding the appropriate and safe use of antibiotics remains inadequate in several important aspects. This study aims to describe the level of public knowledge regarding the appropriate and safe use of antibiotics and to identify knowledge gaps related to antibiotic use practices. This study employed a qualitative method using a literature review (library research) approach. Data were obtained from various scientific sources, including national and international journal articles and relevant publications from health institutions, and were analyzed descriptively through data reduction, categorization, comparison, and synthesis of findings. The results of the literature review indicate that although the public has demonstrated an understanding of the function of antibiotics in treating bacterial infections, misconceptions remain regarding the use of antibiotics for viral diseases, obtaining antibiotics without prescriptions or professional supervision, discontinuing treatment prematurely, reusing leftover antibiotics, and sharing antibiotics with others. The novelty of this study lies in providing a comprehensive synthesis of public knowledge covering the functions, indications, proper use, safety, and risks of antimicrobial resistance. These findings highlight the need to strengthen health education based on credible information to promote rational, appropriate, and safe antibiotic use and to support efforts to prevent antimicrobial resistance.
